I can’t stress enough how important it is to take care of your skin. In Summer especially, the elements can really take their toll on the health and vibrancy of your skin.

To help with these seasonal effects, I have complied four things that help me the most during the warmer weather to ensure my skin is protected and healthy.

1. Fake it don’t bake it
When it comes to tanning, I never go for a bake in the sun because I am way too conscious of how harmful its rays can be. Especially in Australia since we have some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world and the risk is always there. I may lay out in the sun for a couple of moments when on holidays, but I always ensure I am wearing a heap of sunscreen and I’m never looking to get a tan. I much prefer using fake tanners to get that beautiful Summer glow; with constant innovation and new releases in the field, a lot of the time you can get a deeper bronze, than if you had laid in the sun.

2. Go natural
I’m talking about deodorant here ladies. Unless you somehow avoid sweating during the sweltering Australian summer, in which case I am extremely jealous, a deodorant is a must have in the warmer weather. Some of the nasties in your heavy duty deodorants can wreak havoc on your skin, making it sore and sensitive. If you are one of these people of simply want to avoid the ingredients like aluminium, then I would recommend swapping to a natural deodorant. It kills bacteria and helps with scent while not putting any nasties into your system. With something that you use every day like deodorant, it’s something you want to think about carefully.

3. Foundation with sunscreen
Sunscreen is one of those essentials during the Australian Summer to prevent sun damage and premature ageing. It is so much easier to make sure you have sun protection on your face when it is mixed in with your foundation already. Looking for a BB Cream or foundation that has a good SPF included in the formulation helps to protect your skin and saves you having to apply both a sunscreen then your foundation. If you have a favourite foundation that unfortunately doesn’t contain SPF, head to your local pharmacy and pick up an oil free face sunscreen to go under your makeup.

4. Moisturise

When you think about what happens to the ground during a drought…it cracks! So it’s a safe assumption to say that your skin can get pretty parched and dry when constantly exposed to the heat of the sun. Let’s face it, a tan doesn’t look great on cracked skin so you can ensure your skin is feeling and looking great by applying moisturiser daily. Applying moisturiser over the top of a fake tan also works to help extend the longevity of your tan.

I hope these tips have helped you out for the current season that we are in, and given you a bit of inspiration to keep your skin in tip top shape. Later in life, you will be so grateful that you protected your skin with sunscreen and fake baked to prevent damage and premature aging.
